Description

Saudi Arabia, Syria Emerge as Guarantors of Stability in Lebanon Saudi Arabia and Syria, which back rival Lebanese factions, are emerging as guarantors of peace and stability in Lebanon. The country is increasingly threatened with sectarian strife over the controversial Special Tribunal for Lebanon's (STL) and its impending indictment for the 2005 assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik al-Hariri. During the latest war of words between the powerful Shiite Hizbullah group and Prime Minister Saad al-Hariri's Parliamentary Future Movement bloc MPs fears were raised of Sunni-Shiite strife. Consequently, attention turned to Saudi Arabia and Syria to defuse the snowballing tensions and prevent the country's drift toward sectarian violence. "Only a Syrian-Saudi miracle can prevent a (sectarian) disaster in Lebanon," Talal Salman, publisher of the leftist daily AS SAFIR, wrote in a frontpage report on September 20, two days after political tensions between Hizbullah and pro-Hariri MPs grew volatile. Salman, whose newspaper is close to Hizbullah, warned that the feared sectarian strife would serve neither the Sunnis, nor the Shiites, "but would serve to destroy the small country over the heads of all the Lebanese."
